SUMMARY:June Nerd Night (Sunday): Texas Burn Survivor Society
DESCRIPTION:June’s partner organization is the Texas Burn Survivor Society. TBSS founder David Jayne was critically burned in a helicopter accident and spent three years enduring treatment and rehab at Brooke Army Medical Center’s Burn Unit. The camp provides pediatric burn survivors with a week of adventure\, discovery and fun\, designed specifically for pediatric burn survivors aged 7 to 16. Camp David is unique among burn camps because it also includes siblings and children of burn survivors\, whose lives are also severely impacted by burn injury. This amazing camp is made available to the children free of charge. \nCamp David\, named in honor of TBSS co-founded David Jayne\, is in its 21styear and will take place July 10-16 at Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville\, where it has been since 2007. On average\, the camp hosts 55 campers each year. This year\, they will host at least 65 campers. SUMMARY:May Nerd Night: Book Buddies
DESCRIPTION:San Antonio Nerd Night Benefiting Book Buddies\nMay’s partner organization is Book Buddies\, an initiative of San Antonio Youth Literacy. Book Buddies collects books suitable for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade and distributes them at the end of the school year in free book fairs at their Reading Buddy Schools. \nChildren choose books to take home to read over the summer\, which helps prevent the “summer slide” — a regression in learning over summer vacation when they are not being actively taught. Studies also show that children who grow up in homes without books\, and who are not read to as children\, are far more likely to fall behind in school\, fail to complete high school\, and suffer the unfortunate outcomes associated with failure: drug use\, criminal behavior\, early pregnancy\, etc. \nSan Antonio Youth Literacy developed Book Buddies as an offshoot of their Reading Buddy program\, which exists in San Antonio Title 1 schools where at least 75% of the families are below the poverty line. Children at these schools attend the free book fairs at the end of the school year and take the books home and keep them as their own. They can read them over the summer\, share them with family and friends\, or even their parents. In many cases these donated books are the only books in the home. An added benefit is that children in more advantaged homes learn to share their no longer needed books with another child. Everybody wins! \nMay Nerd Night is holding a book drive to collect books for this year’s fairs. Bring your new or gently used books to Geeks Café on May 13th! \nTypes of Books Needed\nPicture Books (Example: Where the Wild Things Are)\nI Can Read series\nChildren’s chapter books\nAny book appropriate up to a 6th grade level \nAmazon Shopping Suggestions

SUMMARY:February Nerd Night
DESCRIPTION:This month we will tackle the issue of homelessness in San Antonio. Our benefit charity is SAMMinistries\, whose mission is to help the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless attain self-sufficiency by offering\, with dignity and compassion\, shelter\, housing\, and services. SUMMARY:December Nerd Night
DESCRIPTION:Our December event will benefit the San Antonio Food Bank. Bring non-perishable food items and help us fill a barrel of food to help the hungry people of San Antonio. Planned events include board game tournaments (TBA)\, Magic the Gathering\, RPG demonstrations and open gaming. Choose something from the Magic Beans game library or bring your own! \nFood drives are critical to the San Antonio Food Bank’s ongoing mission of collecting and redistributing millions of pounds of food to individuals and families in Southwest Texas who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. If you don’t want to bring food items\, we will also be accepting cash donations. Monetary donations are equally as important and are used to leverage the San Antonio Food Bank’s bulk buying power. For example\, every dollar donated provides 10 pounds of food for needy families. \nThe San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) provides emergency food assistance to over 58\,000 people every week through a network of more than 530 partner agencies in Southwest Texas. SAFB is committed not only to providing emergency support\, but also to working to address the systemic issues that cause hunger and poverty. See below for a list of the “Twelve Most Wanted” items and pick up some extra groceries to bring to Magic Beans between December 4th – 14th. If you’d rather donate cash\, follow this link to our Virtual Food Drive. Every dollar donated provides seven meals for hungry Texans! \n12 MOST WANTED ITEMS:\nPeanut Butter\nCereal\nTuna\nBeans\nRice\nMac & Cheese\nChili\nCanned Stews\nCanned Soups\nCanned Luncheon Meats\nFull Meals (Can or Box)\nPop Top Food Items

SUMMARY:November Nerd Night
DESCRIPTION:Our inaugural November event will benefit the Elf Louise Christmas Project. Bring an unwrapped toy for a child ages 0-12 and help bring holiday joy to thousands of less fortunate children in Bexar County. We will also be accepting cash and check donations. Planned events include a Ticket to Ride tournament\, Settlers of Catan tournament\, Magic the Gathering\, RPG demonstrations and open gaming. Choose something from the Magic Beans game library or bring your own! \nEach year\, more than 4\,500 volunteer Elves come together to wrap and deliver 60\,000 toys to some of Bexar County’s most needy children. \nElf Louise recipients receive gifts that may not have great monetary value\, but which carry with them the spirit of Christmas and the good wishes of the community. Volunteers\, through involvement and contributions\, discover or re-discover the richness of the spirit of Christmas\, the spirit of concern for others\, a spirit which transcends religious affiliations. The Elf Louise Christmas Project is for the benefit of the entire community: no project of this magnitude can long endure if there is not some significant good coming from it that benefits the community as a whole. \nThe appeal of this Project lies in part in its very personal focus. Nothing is done assembly-line style. Presents are chosen and wrapped for each child in each family; Santa\, to the extent that is possible\, visits each family in its own home. All volunteers–with their time\, their energy and their ideas–are welcome; diversity is encouraged. \nThe greatest need for toys is for the youngest children. No guns or simulated weapons allowed. Please make sure your gift is unwrapped as two gifts are given to each child and we need to avoid duplications!
